Roy Magara - Founder Magara Law

Magara Law is an employment law firm founded in September 2020 by Employment Solicitor Advocate, Roy Magara.

The firm acts for employers and employees across all sectors and focuses on helping people to achieve satisfaction with their working life.

The firm came to be during the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic when Roy was made redundant from his previous firm in August 2020.

Roy said: “Poor customer service has led many legal professionals to develop a negative reputation. Magara Law was born with the intention of moving away from the legal firm's institutional and cold-hearted stereotype. Instead, the firm follows a customer-centric approach which puts the client's best interests at the very core.”

Roy started his firm at a delicate point in time - he had one very young child (with another on the way), the pandemic was taking its full effect, and there were many people around him concerned that it wasn’t the right decision. Startup costs alone were steep and mostly funded by Roy’s redundancy package.

Immediately after starting Magara Law, Roy joined Perch Coworking in Bicester after meeting Community Manager Lucy at a local networking event, and his business quickly found its feet.

Roy said: “The element of risk is a big part of startup entrepreneurship, but being based at a coworking space I learned so much through just being around other people who have made mistakes and gotten through it. A lot of my family and friends were worried that it was the wrong time to be starting a new business, but with the furloughing of staff, redundancies and remote working, it turned out there were a lot of people needing the right employment advice.”

Since he started up, Roy has gone from a solo entrepreneur to the leader of a team of five staff working across four offices as of April 2024. The firm has worked with over 1000 clients and quadrupled its turnover.

It also doubled its forecasted turnover in its very first quarter, which Roy attributes to several months of personal study on topics like marketing, SEO and website building.

Roy said: “In the firm’s early months, I couldn’t afford to outsource support with those essential business elements that I wasn’t experienced in but needed to have in order to gain traction. Instead, I took advantage of the many free online courses that were on offer during the pandemic and created my own website, marketing materials and even got Magara Law on to page one of Google within six months.

“Later down the line, I’m proud to be continuously developing the business and delighted that Magara Law was recognised for six awards in 2022 & 2023, half of which were wins. Here’s hoping for more awards in 2024 and beyond.”

“We live in an age of reviews and accolades, and small or new businesses can struggle to get off the ground in terms of building a strong reputation when clients favour established businesses with testimonials. Awards like this are invaluable because it adds credibility to all the great things we say that we do, and gives people confidence that we’re the right firm for them.”
