RCTPhotomarathon: Bringing Photography and Community Together

Gaby Bromage, Cofounder of RCTPhotomarathon

Founded in 2019, RCTPhotomarathon is a unique not-for-profit community event that encourages creativity through photography. Co-founded by Gaby Bromage, 25, and her father Alan, the event is designed for participants of all skill levels and ages. With a simple yet engaging format, attendees are given 12 photography topics over a 24-hour period, challenging them to capture one image per topic. The event has rapidly grown in popularity, selling out 100 spaces faster each year and gaining sponsorship from both local and global companies.

A Passion Project Turned Community Phenomenon

Gaby and Alan both have educational backgrounds in Photography and Design, though their professional lives have taken them in different directions. RCTPhotomarathon began as a passion project, inspired by the now-defunct Cardiff Photomarathon, which Gaby had once participated in and loved. Determined to bring back the experience for others, they launched their own version of the event. Despite initial setbacks, including the cancellation of their first event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they remained resilient. They engaged the community through online photography competitions and seasonal events to keep momentum alive.

An Inclusive and Welcoming Event

What sets RCTPhotomarathon apart is its inclusivity. The event welcomes everyone, from complete beginners using mobile phones to experienced photographers with professional equipment. The youngest entrant so far was only three years old, having technically participated before birth! The event’s focus is on creativity, community, and fun. To celebrate participants’ efforts, RCTPhotomarathon hosts an annual gallery display where every entrant’s work is showcased, followed by an awards evening that also raises funds for Valleys Kids, a local children’s charity.

Growth and Recognition

Over the years, RCTPhotomarathon has gained significant recognition. The event was honoured to be featured in the volunteers’ tent at the Eisteddfod and has received coverage from the BBC. One of its most exciting moments was securing sponsorship from Innocent Smoothies, a brand Gaby admires for its creative social media presence. Additionally, renowned photographer Martin Parr once participated as a judge, further solidifying the event’s credibility within the photography community.

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead

The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. The biggest hurdle was the cancellation of the first planned event due to COVID-19. Rather than letting this setback define them, Gaby and Alan pivoted, organising online competitions and themed photography challenges to maintain engagement. This resilience paid off, as excitement continued to build, leading to a fully booked event in 2021 and every year since.

Looking ahead, RCTPhotomarathon faces a new challenge: its rapid growth. The event has nearly outgrown its current gallery space, and discussions about expanding the team are on the horizon. However, for Gaby and Alan, the true success of RCTPhotomarathon isn’t measured in numbers but in the joy and sense of community it fosters. Seeing families participate together, children returning each year to improve their skills, and a collective appreciation for photography is what makes all the effort worthwhile.
